Principles of Judo
The two main principles of judo as envisioned by the founder of judo, Professor Jigoro Kano, are as follows;
1) Maximum Efficiency with Minimum Effort – ‘Seiryoku zen yo’
“Whatever the objective, it can best be attained by applying to maximum effect one’s mental and physical energy for that purpose”.
2) Mutual Welfare and Benefit – ‘Jita Kyoei’
“Mutual welfare and benefit for oneself and others”.
Both principles apply equally to the practice of judo, and the enjoyment of judo as a ‘way of life’.
