Olympic Bronze !!!

Congratulations to Antoine Valois-Fortier (-81kg) on earning a Bronze medal in Olympic competition at the London 2012 Games! Antoine is looking very much like a young Nicolas Gill, Canada’s most decorated judo Olympian. Gill himself last won Silver at the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia. Looking forward to seeing what our Team can do in Rio, 2016.

45th Season just over one month away !!!!!

The 45th season of the Almonte Judo Club begins Wednesday, September 5, 2012. Only 5 years until the ‘BIG’ celebration, but that does not mean we do not have cause to celebrate 45 years. This season promises to be an exciting one, and we hope you can join us to share in the fun and excitement! Fall judo begins just weeks after the current summer session ends. If you did not take part in the summer session, or are new to the sport, not to worry – we’ll ease into the new season. If you or your children have never participated in a martial art (and Olympic Sport !!!) there is no better time to join. Canada hopes to place one or more athletes on the podium in judo – stay tuned ……

Summer Judo 2012

Hello everyone,

Further to my email of March 4, this notice is to remind everyone of the upcoming Summer Judo session, June 3 through August 19, 2012. Classes will be held each Sunday morning (long weekends excluded) from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM, at 10 Houston Drive, Almonte.

Summer Judo was initiated in June 2006 in response to club member interest in having judo extend beyond April of each year. So, here it is for the SEVENTH consecutive year !!!

This offer is available to all students provided they can endure a full 2 hour workout! We normally begin each class with an outdoor run (weather permitting) then enjoy the remainder of the class indoors in the air conditioned premises of the TaeKwon Do building which we rent. The outdoor run is fun and safe, and is normally broken into two groups based on age and running ability. The dojo is equipped with lots of neat and fun equipment to keep the classes interesting. Classes are designed to challenge students of all levels, reinforce what is taught throughout the regular season, introduce new concepts and techniques, maintain/improve fitness levels, and provide all important mat-time. When September arrives, summer judo students have a clear advantage over those who have not participated.

The estimated cost of the 10 week session is $30 per student. This assumes we have approx. 20 students sign-up – which I expect we will. Our Sunday morning class is normally comprised of male and female students of all ages and belt levels – there is a partner for everyone!

Dates are as follows;

1. June 3
2. June 10
3. June 17 (Father’s Day)
4. June 24
5. July 8
6. July 15
7. July 22
8. July 29
9. Aug 12
10. Aug 19

I will have a sign-up poster at the dojo starting this week. You are welcome to add your name to the list if it is not already there. I have taken the liberty to add a few names based on earlier responses received.

In terms of payment ….. we’ll see what the level of interest is, then set a firm price based on the number of participants. I will begin collecting money the week of April 11, and all payments will be due no later than April 18.

If you/your child are interested, you may email your response to me or simply add your name to the list displayed at the dojo. If anyone has any further questions regarding the program please feel free to contact me.

Women’s Night #2 held October 19, 2011

A great evening of women’s judo was celebrated Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the Almonte dojo. A total of 17 female judoka gathered from Clubs including; Takahashi Martial Arts, Club de Judo Nicolas-Gatineau, Odawa Judo Club, Munster Judo Club, and Almonte Judo Club. A great workout was had by all, and the event served to further strengthen camaraderie between members, clubs, and regions. Our aim is to create a core group of judoka who travel from Club to Club keeping the spirit of women’s judo alive and well! If you or your Club are interested in participating in similar events in the future, drop us an email and we’ll be sure you are included in the plans going forward.

Women’s Judo Night in Almonte

Following on the success of last year’s event, we are excited to announce a free training session again this year, Wednesday October 19, 2011 from 8:00 PM – 9:30PM. The intent is to gather as many women (say 13 yrs +) together for the mutual benefit of experiencing a variety of training partners. Last year we were fortunate to gather interest from at least 6 or 7 Clubs, and we hope to attract as many Clubs and individuals this year, if not more. We also had all belt levels represented, white through black, and it would be great to see this again. There is amazing judo talent in this area and everyone can benefit significantly from sessions such as this one.

Almonte is known as ‘The Friendly Town’ – and WE ARE !!! If that is not enough to draw you here, you will be guaranteed a good workout (on regulation tatami), an A-1 facility, lots of partners, camaraderie, and tons of fun. There will be a blend of pair activities, stand-up, ground work …. whatever can fit into 90 minutes. We are only 20 minutes west of Kanata, the facility is easy to find, and we have ample free paved parking in a safe and well lit area adjacent to the facility. If that parking area approaches capacity we may also use the adjacent Church parking lot. And did I mention we have a Timmies!

Our address in Almonte is 182 Bridge Street. The dojo is located in the Upstairs Hall of the Almonte Arena and Curling Club.

We would appreciate if DojoShus could post this in their dojo, pass on to their own email distribution list, and promote, promote, promote! To those who attended last year, please share the good word with your colleagues in judo.

This will be the first notice of several, but let’s reserve this date now and begin the process of recruiting. This is also an Ontario Winter Games year and the East Region will need female participants (and male) – here’s a good chance to rally our judoka to participate and ensure the continued inclusion of judo in the Winter Games.

2011-12 draft calendar of events

2011-12 draft calendar

Judo begins Sept 7 !!!

The Almonte Judo Club welcomes the start of another season, Wednesday September 7. The Club originated in 1968 and has seen more than 1,500 students from Almonte and surrounding communities pass through the doors since that time. Classes are held weekly in the upper hall of the Almonte Arena. The premises underwent a significant renovation last season and the facility is one of the finest judo dojos our Region has to offer! While we practice on Olympic calibre mats, family members can enjoy a spacious and comfortable viewing area and the company of others. Paved parking is ample and free, there is direct elevator access, adjoining kitchen facilities, modern washrooms and so much more.
Judo is a martial art of Japanese origin, established by Dr. Jigoro Kano in 1882. Judo is an Olympic sport, a recreational pursuit, a means of self-defence, a way of life …. and so much more! A common question asked ; ‘Is there striking involved?’ In reply, there is no hand or foot strikes but there is physical contact and an element of grappling. Students work with partners in order to develop their judo techniques, and in so doing they improve their flexibility, balance, coordination, stamina and strength. Through the practice of judo, students develop mind and body in a safe and well controlled environment, and have fun while doing so!
Our Club is built on the premise of ‘Confidence, Fitness, Fairness, and Discipline’. If any or all of these attributes appeal to you, perhaps judo is your calling. Judo is practiced by more than 100 million people in nearly 200 countries , and is second only to soccer in worldwide popularity. It is practiced by young and old, male and female, and also accommodates differently abled athletes. Almonte is very fortunate to have such a well-established club, steep in tradition, and very affordable to everyone.
We invite you to join Head Instructor (Sensei) Gord MacDonald and all existing members to experience a martial art with benefits for life! Registration and first class coincide with ‘Mississippi Mills at a Glance’, all being held in the Almonte Arena, Wednesday evening, September 7. Meet some of our team downstairs, or come upstairs to view a class in session. The Almonte Judo Club offers ‘unlimited’ free classes while you/your child decide whether judo is suitable and fulfills your expectations.

We hope to meet you soon!!
